You turn the key and the engine cranks — you can hear it turning over — but it never actually starts. This is one of the most confusing breakdowns a driver can experience because the starter and battery are clearly working. Something else is preventing the engine from firing.
The good news is that a cranking engine narrows the diagnosis significantly. The problem is almost always in one of three systems: fuel, spark, or compression. Here is how to find it.
Why an Engine Cranks But Does Not Start
For a petrol engine to start, three things must happen simultaneously:
- Fuel — the correct amount of fuel must reach the cylinders
- Spark — the spark plugs must fire at the right moment
- Compression — the cylinders must be able to compress the air-fuel mixture
Remove any one of these and the engine cranks without starting. Your job is to figure out which one is missing.
Most Common Causes
1. No Fuel Reaching the Engine
The most common cause of a cranking no-start is a fuel delivery problem. The engine is turning over but there is no fuel to ignite.
Possible fuel system causes:
- Empty fuel tank — the fuel gauge may be faulty and reading higher than actual level
- Failed fuel pump — the pump inside the tank has stopped working. You should hear a faint hum from the fuel tank for 2 seconds when you first turn the key to ON. No hum often means a dead pump
- Clogged fuel filter — a blocked filter starves the engine of fuel
- Failed fuel pressure regulator — causes incorrect fuel pressure at the injectors
- Faulty fuel injectors — clogged or stuck injectors cannot deliver fuel to the cylinders
Turn the key to the ON position without cranking and listen for a faint humming sound from the rear of the car near the fuel tank. That is the fuel pump priming. If you hear nothing, the fuel pump is the most likely culprit.
2. No Spark
The ignition system must deliver a strong spark to each cylinder at exactly the right time. When spark fails the engine cranks endlessly without firing.
Common ignition system failures:
- Failed crankshaft position sensor — the ECU uses this sensor to time spark and fuel injection. If it fails, the ECU does not know when to fire the plugs. This is one of the most common causes of a sudden cranking no-start
- Worn or fouled spark plugs — plugs that are too worn or oil-fouled cannot produce a strong enough spark
- Failed ignition coil — a dead coil means no spark to that cylinder or all cylinders
- Faulty distributor or ignition module — on older vehicles
3. No Compression
If the engine has no compression, it cannot ignite the fuel-air mixture regardless of how much fuel and spark are present. Low or no compression is usually a sign of serious internal engine damage.
Causes of compression loss:
- Blown head gasket
- Broken timing belt or timing chain — this is critical. If the timing belt has snapped, the engine will crank but never start and attempting to start it repeatedly can cause further valve damage
- Severely worn piston rings
- Burnt or bent valves
If you suspect a snapped timing belt — the engine will crank very easily and sound hollow — stop cranking immediately. On interference engines, continued cranking bends the valves further and turns a $600 belt replacement into a $3,000+ head rebuild.
4. Security System or Immobiliser Active
Modern vehicles have immobilisers that cut fuel or spark if they do not recognise the key. If the immobiliser light on the dashboard stays on or flashes when you try to start, the car is not recognising your key.
Common causes:
- Key fob battery dead
- Damaged transponder chip in the key
- Faulty immobiliser control unit
- Recently replaced ECU that has not been paired to the key
5. Flooded Engine
If you have been cranking the engine repeatedly for a long time, or if you smell strong petrol, the engine may be flooded — too much fuel in the cylinders with no air to ignite it.
To clear a flooded engine: press the accelerator fully to the floor and hold it there while cranking for 10 seconds. Release, wait 30 seconds, try again normally. The wide-open throttle allows maximum air in to dilute the excess fuel.
6. Bad Camshaft or Crankshaft Position Sensor
These sensors tell the ECU the exact position of the engine so it can time fuel injection and ignition correctly. A failed sensor means the ECU fires fuel and spark at the wrong time — or not at all. The engine cranks but never catches.

If the engine cranks does that mean the battery is fine? Usually yes — if the engine cranks at normal speed the battery has enough charge for starting. A weak battery may crank slowly which is a different problem.
