1. Low Engine Oil or Oil Pressure

This is the most common cause of engine knocking — and the most urgent. Engine oil creates a thin film between moving metal parts. When oil level drops or oil pressure falls, metal components begin making direct contact with each other. The result is a rhythmic ticking or knocking that gets louder as the engine warms up.

Always check the oil level first when you hear a new knocking noise. Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert fully, and pull again. If the oil is below the minimum mark or looks black and gritty, that is your starting point.

3. Detonation / Pre-ignition (Pinging)

Detonation happens when the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder ignites before the spark plug fires. Instead of one controlled combustion event, you get multiple small explosions colliding inside the cylinder. The result is a sharp metallic pinging or knocking sound, especially under acceleration or climbing hills.
